Installing Application Templates

For users who wish to make the quickest start or just see the capabilities of SpeedBase, a plenty of ready-to-use application templates are available for install.

What is an Application Template?

It is simply a preconfigured, predesigned database content with one or more catalogs, fields and other structural items. When you select and install a "Contact Manager" template for example, SpeedBase configures your database so that you can save and manage company, people and appointment information.

SpeedBase suggests you to install application templates whenever you create a new database. You may also manually open this window by selecting "Install Application Templates" under "Database" menu.

The key points you should know about application templates are given in the Q/A below:

How do I install an Application Template?

Click "Install Application Templates" from "Database" menu, select the template you wish to install from the list, click the "Add" button. Click "Install Selected Templates". You may add and install multiple templates if you wish, but new users are recommended to move "slower". You can always install more templates any time you want.

Do I really need to install Application Templates?

When you click to a template name on the list, information about main uses as well as the content of the template is displayed below. If you think that a template seems suitable for your needs, you may install it. Even if you do not find exactly what you are looking for on that template, you can always modify the database items, e.g. add new or remove unnecessary fields until it fits your requirements. A template should be considered as a quick starting point.

If none of the templates seems interesting to you, you can choose to start from scratch. Note that it is possible to build exactly the same functionality of an existing template by creating catalogs, fields and views manually.

What if I have the same catalogs already before installing a template?

You should act more carefully in this case. If there is already a catalog having the same name as the catalog which will be installed with the template, SpeedBase will merge these two during install. New fields are added and placed on the record form and as a result, old and new fields may look entangled to each other. Do not think this as a disaster, because, you only need to open the form designer and rearrange the field placements as well as removing duplicates.

If there are no overlapping catalogs, SpeedBase will always create new, independent catalogs and your existing configuration is not effected at all. Note that if a template contains a catalog named as "contacts" and you also have a catalog named as "people", both aiming to save the same type of information, no merge occurs and you end up with two catalogs for storing the same type of information. To prevent this to happen, you may rename your existing catalog to "contacts" just before the install to force a merge.

How do I uninstall a template?

SpeedBase does not distinguish between database items which are created during a template install and created manually by your self. You can simply delete a catalog which was created during a template install to get rid of it. Make sure that you do not have valuable records in the catalogs you are about to delete.

I installed a template but then messed up things. How do I repair it?

Reinstall the same template, SpeedBase recreates missing fields and views in this case. You may also prefere to first deleting the catalogs before reinstall which are created during the template install. Make sure that you do not have valuable records in the catalogs you are about to delete.
